Imperial Valley College offers a Fire Academy in line with the California State Fire Marshall. Located in Imperial, California, the College has trained Firefighter-I classes since 2004 and is State accredited! The Academy is for one year and begins every Fall and ends in the following Fall. How can I be a Firefighter?

The California State Fire Marshall has established the requirements for State certification, and the IVC Fire Academy satisfies the training requirements to become a Firefighter I.

What is the cost?

Costs include tuition, parking, student fees, uniform, materials fees, textbook and accessories, and a background check and drug screen. An approximate cost of $3,198 + can be expected.

Conduct:

It will be expected of students to adhere to strict rules of conduct. Appearance and grooming standards will be enforced. More operations and expectations will be discuss in Orientation.

Is the Academy difficult?

Firefighting is a very strenuous and physically demanding job. The course involves a great deal of manipulative training. The Fire Service requires knowledge of academic subjects from English and Math to Chemistry. The classroom training is intensive and requires dedicated effort on the part of each student.

What are the requirements?

The high school diploma or GED. Students must be 18 years of age or older, in Meet physical standards and pass agility test. Pass the Written Exam with 70% or higher. Meeting with the Fire Academy counselor (Stella Orfanos-Woo) is advised to make sure of program and College requirements. If selected, students will be provided with detailed information on preparing for the Academy, including successful completion of a background check and drug screen, physical/TB exam, purchase of uniforms, textbooks, and materials.

How am I selected?

Selection is by an application process. The application and questionnaire, high school diploma or HS transcript with graduation date shown or the GED, IVC transcript (if applicable). Those ranking in the top are invited to join the Academy.

When do I apply?

Once requirements are met, submit a completed application packet to Building 3200 between the period of January 1 and May 31. Applications can be downloaded from the website below or picked up from Building 3200.

What are the courses?

Certificate of Achievement as Firefighter I – 22.5 units total:

  • Fire 140—Fire/First Responders (9.5 units) 83 hrs. of lecture with 47 hrs. lab
  • Fire 142—Firefighter Academy I (10 units) 97 hrs. of lecture with 27 hrs. lab
  • Fire 144—Firefighter Academy II (3 units) 54 hrs. lecture 
  • Fire 148 is a 54-hour, 1-unit course open to students who have successfully completed the Academy and eligible to complete the online written and skills certification tests required by the State to obtain a Fighter I Certificate. Outside students who have an approved, signed letter from a fire department Fire Chief or Training Officer may be able to participate.

The Academy is for one year, beginning Fall Semester and ending in following Fall Semester.

Successful completion of the above courses, with a grade of C or higher, meets the requirement for obtaining the Certificate of Achievement from IVC as Firefighter I. Students must apply for this Certificate following the posted College deadlines.

Successful completion of this Certificate also meets the educational requirements for a California State Fire Marshall Firefighter I Certificate. Upon completion, the candidate is required to be affiliated with a fire agency for one year of part-time/volunteer or 6 months of full-time work experience as a firefighter to meet the requirement of work experience. The candidate's work experience must be verified by the agency's Fire Chief with a written letter to the California State Fire Marshall.
