News & Updates

IVC is making some exciting new changes in its paramedic program that will allow qualified applicants to continue working while completing their paramedic studies. Effective August 2017, classroom time will be limited to 2 full days a week, leaving 5 other days to study and/or work. Additional days will not be required until the student is approved for clinical and field experience.

IVC's BIOL 090 Anatomy & Physiology for Health Occupations, or the equivalent or higher level Anatomy & Physiology, will now be required. This prerequisite must be fulfilled with a C grade or higher if applying for Fall 2019 and after.

 Additional Requirements

Upon admission to the program, the student will be required to pass a health examination by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner. This will be required in Summer and prior to the start of EMTP 225. This examination includes a basic physical exam, 2-step PPD Skin Test, and immunizations (2-step MMR, Tdap, Varicella, and Hepatitis B). The student contacts the IVC Student Health Center (SHC) for an appointment and further instructions. Requirements are time sensitive and students are notified of deadlines. Submission of all completed documentation is to the EMS Office Secretary. Students may visit their own health practitioner, however, all information is channeled through the IVC SHC to be determined complete.

A background check and drug screen will also be required through American Databank (ADB). Students log in to http://ivcbackground.com/, create an account, and follow the steps. Results are sent by ADB to the student and the EMS Office.

During the last semester of the program and at least 3 weeks prior to applying for the National Registry exam, students will need to update the background check and drug screen clearance. Students who do not pass the background check may not be eligible for the state/national licensure exam. The goal of the Paramedic Program is to prepare competent entry-level paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the levels of an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Responder

More information on the paramedic licensure process for National Registry can be obtained from the California Emergency Medical Services Authority website: http://www.emsa.ca.gov/paramedic/default.asp For additional questions, contact the EMS Department Office at 760-355-6483, IVC Campus, Building 3200.
