FAQs for the Imperial Valley College LVN Program

When is the best time to apply? When all prerequisites are successfully completed. It is recommended students complete the co-requisite PSY 204.

Can I apply with the prerequisites in progress? Yes. However, chance for admission increases when prerequisites are completed successfully.

What is required with the application? Official copies of transcripts from all colleges and institutions attended outside of IVC; a copy of the IVC transcript (Webstar), a copy of high school diploma or GED, a copy of the counselor’s educational plan, and any applicable documentation from the Checklist. Students must submit the Checklist with the application.

When are applications accepted? Every three (3) semesters, after a VN class completes. Applications are accepted in September if a class is ending in December; and in March for a class ending in June. The deadlines are: March 1-31st and September 1-30th. Students are advised to contact the Nursing & Allied Health Department for specific dates.

Should I meet with my counselor before turning in an application? Yes! A counselor develops your educational plan and follows you through the program. A copy of the educational plan should be submitted with the application.

Do local students have priority in the program? No. All students who apply and meet the criteria are considered for admission.

Are students placed on a wait list? No. Students who are not selected will need to submit a new application.

Is the TEAS Exam required? Not at this time but it may be in the future.

When do I know if I am accepted? Applicants are notified by regular mail about 30 days after the deadline period.

What should I do if I’m not accepted? Apply for the next class and take classes to increase your GPA. Your counselor can assist in this area.

How am I selected for the program? Students are ranked by a point system and the top 20 are selected. A new multi-screening admission criteria is used which considers 1) GPA for prerequisite courses; 2) Academic Degrees or Relevant Certificates or Work Experience; 3) Life Experience or Special Circumstances; and 4) Alternate Language Proficiency.

Can Medical Terminology be waived based on work experience or other certificates? No! The AHP 100 Medical Terminology course or an equivalent course is required. Students who have a petition waiving Medical Terminology must take the course.
