ASSESSMENT: Identifies present level of skills in English, reading and math.

Advisment: Results give direction in choosing the appropriate courses.

Assessment is a broad category of reviewing your skills and abilities in order to recommend the most appropriate classes that could contribute to your success. Our placement tests are only one way you can satisfy your assessment requirements. If you have completed an English or math course at another college, eligibility may be determined by your records.

Assessment identifies a student’s present level of skills in English, reading, and math. It provides direction in choosing the appropriate courses to take, based on assessment scores. You should take the placement tests prior to enrolling at IVC as this will give you and you counselor valuable information about your skills in reading, writing, and math so together you may develop the best plan for achieving your educational goals. After taking the placement tests, you should contact the Counseling Center to make an appointment at (760) 355-6246.

Re-testing Policy:  Students who want to re-test need to see a counselor and go through a petition process.  Re-tests are only allowed for extenuating circumstances beyond the students’ control on a case by case basis.
As a general policy, incoming Freshman are not allowed to re-test.  They need to complete 12 units of successful coursework at Imperial Valley College before they can be allowed to re-test.  Students are encouraged to take courses in English and mathematics in order to demonstrate proficiency in these subject areas.

The Assessment Center offers the following services to help students achieve their educational and career goals:

  • Reading, Writing and Math Assessment Tests
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) Tests
  • GED Tests
  • Ability to Benefit Tests

Assessment schedules are available in the Counseling Center, Admissions Office, Reading & Writing Lab, English Division, Disabled Student Programs & Services, External Campuses, Financial Aid Office the Assessment Center, and on-line.
