SOCIOLOGY

Sociology studies every kind of human activity - from intimate family relationships to newly developed social movements, from organized crime to work worlds, from cities to small groups focusing on how people interact with each other to build, maintain and change human society.  Sociology emphasizes social relationships and the social causes, contexts, and consequences of human behavior.  It is unique as a discipline for its wide scope and general relevance.  Still considered a relatively new scientific discipline, sociology is a hybrid of several academic areas including psychology, anthropology, philosophy, law and justice, political science, medicine and public health, history, and geography.  Specialities within the field of Sociology include:

  • Crime and Deviance
  • Gender and Sexuality Issues
  • Medical Sociology
  • Social Work and Community Sociology
  • Law, Crime, and Deviance
  • Urban/Suburban Studies
  • Human Development and Aging
  • Sociology of Technology
  • Media Sociology
  • Sociology of Popular Culture
  • Political Sociology
