| This is an introductory course to photojournalism. Previous photography experience is desirable. We will first cover basic camera features, light and exposure and creative techniques. You will then be exposed to the philosophies, tools and techniques used in photojournalism. This is a hands-on course where you will cover real news events, understand digital imaging using Adobe Photoshop software, and contribute to the campus newspaper. | |

Objective: | | |
| By the end of this course you should be able to identify a good photo (and the elements that make it a good photo); know how to shoot and process (using Adobe Photoshop) a photograph of newspaper quality; and how to do the necessary reporting for a photograph. Along with gaining photojournalism skills and ability, you should also gain a good working knowledge of the field of photojournalism (i.e., ethics). You will produce a photo story (essay) that should be publishable. It will be either a narrative or documentary style in depth photographic study of a subject that includes a story, headlines and captions. | |

Photo Assignments: | | | |
| You should prepare to shoot a lot of photos. You will be expected to complete single-photo assignments and one multi-photo assignment over a short period of time. Depending on our coordination with the journalism instructors, you will also be expected to shoot photos for the campus newspaper (your single-photos assignments should fit in well with this publication). Adobe Photoshop will be used and available for students to work on and submit photos. | |

| Regular class attendance is expected for students to accomplish the work necessary to successfully complete this course. You are responsible for all material presented in class even if you miss for a legitimate reason (e.g., illness, family emergency, etc.). Please notify me in advance if you cannot attend, and arrange to get class notes/assignments from another student. Please note that by IVC rules, three (3) un-excused absences may result in you being dropped from the class. | |
Students will be graded on the following: | |
| 2 short research assignment (law and ethics; NPPA website)...10% of grade 1 photo story (due final’s week)…15% of grade
Twelve photographs...30% of grade 2 sports action photos 2 feature photos 1 general news photo 1 nature and environment photo 2 “technique” photos 1 portrait and personality 1 of the arts 2 short photo stories (one sports feature and spring break documentary) Participation with campus newspaper…25%; Completed portfolio of work…20% of grade | |
