Emergency Notifications and Timely warning

It is the policy of Imperial Valley College to issue an emergency notification anytime there is an immediate threat to the health and safety of all staff and students. This includes off site campuses when college students or staff are present on campus.  An emergency notification supersedes a timely warning.

In the event of an emergency, the Director of Campus Safety and Security is to be notified and will determine if an Emergency Notification is to be sent out. In the event of his absence, the Community and Media Relations department or the Associate Dean of Human Resources will determine if a warning will be issued.  IVC will without delay, take into account the safety of the campus community, determine the content of the notification and determine how the notification will be issued. Unless the notification in their professional judgment, will compromise efforts to assist a victim or to contain, respond to, or otherwise mitigate the emergency.

In the event that an emergency warning is issued, IVC can post information on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and use the Alert U system so the message can be sent to cellular phones.  After the threat has been neutralized, IVC will provide follow up information in the same manner that it was issued.

The Director of Campus Safety and Security will coordinate a semi-annually test for staff of the Emergency Notification System and annually test the Emergency Notification for students. It can be done through the Alert U system and by posting on at least one of the web sites available.  The test does not have to be announced.

In the event it is determined that an emergency notification should not be issued but that there is an ongoing threat to students or staff or will aid in the prevention of similar crimes; a timely warning will be issued.  A timely warning should be posted on student information boards, places were students comingle or posted on the website.   It should include the date, time, location and what the ongoing threat is, as well who the students /staff should contact if they have any questions or information that can help.

IVC will put out as much information as possible without jeopardizing an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of an individual, cause a suspect to flee or evade detection, or result in the destruction of evidence.
