What is the Imperial Valley College Educational Talent Search Program? Imperial Valley College Educational Talent Search is a federally funded program designed to help low income and potential first generation college students gain entry to and graduate from an institution of higher education. The goal of the program is to provide assistance to these students as a means to facilitate their post-high school educational objectives.
What Does Educational Talent Search Program Offer? The Educational Talent Search Program staff is available to the students until he/she graduates from high school. The Educational Talent Search Program implements an extensive curriculum of supportive services to meet each students' individual academic needs. Some of the services provided include but are not limited to:
- Individual, group, and personal counseling. Career counseling and guidance. - Workshops and special classes on such topics as study skills, substance abuse education, availability of financial aid at the college level and admission application assistance to postsecondary institutions. - Career presentations. - Tutorial assistance. - Special activities focused on seventh and eighth graders. - Math and Science summer Programs. - Parental involvement and intervention - Fieldtrips to various college campuses. - Assistance to re-enter high school or obtainment of high school equivalency through GED testing. - University Campus Tours.
Who Is Eligible? Students attending one of the target schools (Barbara Worth Junior High School, Brawley Union High School, Calexico High School, De Anza Junior High School, William Moreno Junior High School, Calipatria High School, Central Union High School, Southwest High School, Heber Junior High School, Holtville High School, Imperial High School, San Pasqual High School) and students who have dropped out of school are eligible to apply for the Educational Talent Search Program. To be eligible, a student must:
1. Meet federal eligibility guidelines. 2. Possession of academic potential for admission to postsecondary institutions. 3. Be in need of the assistance provided by the Educational Talent Search Program in order to successfully complete course work. 4. Obtain an application from a counselor, and bring a copy of the parents'/legal guardian's most recent income verification.
Who Provides the Services? The Talent Search staff provides these services. The staff, whose commitment is to help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in school, consists of a Program Director, Program Counselors, Lead Tutors, and Peer Tutors.
Special Services
The Educational Talent Search Club is an organization which serves various purposes. Active membership in the club incorporates student leadership qualities and encourages educational, social and recreational activities among former Educational Talent Search students attending Imperial Valley College.
The club organizes a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, and participation in these activities is an exciting time for the members. Annual fundraisers have included a volleyball tournament, car washes, and food sales.
Summer Component
Educational Talent Search participants will have the opportunity to participate in a six-week Math and Science Program at either a California State University or a University of California Campus.
Career Presentations
Career presentations are given by guest speakers of the community who share their educational background and job experiences with the students. Presentations are given throughout the school year at the target school.
Workshops
A sequence of workshops are held through the school year by Educational Talent Search Program counselors on the following topics:
-Self-Esteem -Test Anxiety -Study for Final Exams -Motivation -Financial Aid Application/ University Admissions Application (H.S. Seniors)
