Saturday Session
Saturday Sessions are different from Saturday Tutoring. Students are not tutored at Saturday Sessions. Saturday Sessions are held one day a month and are usually the last Saturday of the Month.
Students are transported to IVC via School bus and are picked up from seven different Imperial Valley Locations. All locations will either include a high school pick and drop off or similar location (Police Station, Post Office, Library). Students are notified before a Saturday Session and receive the notification flyer and bus schedule for the event.
Some of the courses or issues covered during Saturday session are the following:
-
Provides computer access and a rigorous computer science course to Upward Bound students.
-
Students are trained in such programs as Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Access.
-
Students are presented with the College Entrance examinations such as SAT and ACT as well as receive preparation for the exams.
-
Community Guest speakers are invited to speak to the group about their career, education, and personal choices. Guest speakers have included such fields as Law, Medicine, Math, Engineering, and Art. Students receive an understanding of the work it takes to make it in those fields. Students who are not yet sure of their future career choices are also introduced to the work it takes to make it in such fields.
Saturday Sessions for High School Seniors are different. In general, High School Seniors are transitioning towards higher education. For a Senior, their last year in high school is filled with applications, examinations, and projects. Saturday Sessions for Seniors consists of Seniors receiving the help they need to complete applications and make certain that they are on track for graduation and college entrance.Senior Important tasks Upward Bound helps with:
While this understanding is crucial for the student, parents are also invited so that they can understand the process as well and join the program in tracking the student’s progress. |
